"YOU WANT TO GO THERE?" my girlfriend, Brittany Griffith, said. "Just for free soloing?"
"Trust me, it's going to be rad," I said.

Not many people would want to join this eccentric quest. Sport climbing in Greece? Sure. Bouldering in Rocklands? Pack the pads; the posse is on its way. But free soloing in Siberia? Not so much.

But Brittany would. She had to. We'd had amazing adventures together all over the world. I knew she wouldn't want to miss this one.
Brittany pursed her lips. A look of intrigue lit up her green eyes. I could tell she was starting to daydream.

After a quick phone call, John Burcham, a photographer who had worked with Brittany on numerous climbing assignments, eagerly signed on for the trip as well. We agreed to bring no ropes or gear, just two pairs of climbing shoes and two chalkbags each. We wanted the true Stolby experience.
